Active Vs. Passive Alarm

Car alarms are basically either passive or active, depending on how they are turned on. Passive alarms are automatically activated, while active alarms are either set or turned off with a transmitter.

  1. Types

    • Passive car alarms automatically turn on when the ignition key is removed from the switch or all the doors are locked. Active alarms must be turned on by pressing a button on a transmitter or toggling a switch.

    How They Work

    • A car alarm sounds when the opening of a door, hood or trunk closes a switch and completes an electrical circuit. Current then flows and generates sound, according to AutoFacts.org. Unlocking the driver's side door turns off some systems. Turning the security key in the ignition turns off other alarms.
