Technology Used for Being a Computer Engineer

Computer engineers need to know hardware design.

A computer engineer needs to keep up with several related technologies. She needs to know computer hardware and software fundamentals in order to design reliable systems. In this rapidly changing field, computer engineers must make learning a daily activity.

Digital Electronics

Computer electronics at its core deals with logic and discrete on and off states. Engineers build computer parts out of integrated circuits, each of which may contain millions of transistors.

Radio Electronics

In order to provide mobile access to computer resources, some computer hardware sends and receives radio signals. The engineer must understand radio circuits and how computers use them to transmit data.

Software

The programs that run on a computer are its software. It comes in many layers, from low-level programs that run a hard drive to web browsers than anyone can use. The engineer needs to learn computer programming languages and the strategies or algorithms computers perform to accomplish tasks.

Networking

In order for computers to share information on a network, the engineers must first develop communication protocols. These define the hardware used to transmit data, how much data it sends, and how to establish when computers are sending or receiving.
