  1. Past And Present

    • Merlot is a grape variety that originated in the Bordeaux region of France. It was primarily used as a blending grape to soften wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot was introduced in California in the mid-19th century.

    Geography

    • California is popular when it comes to wineries because of the climate and the large variety in soils. According to the Wine Institute website, the state had 107 wine-grape growing areas that were recognized by the United States government in 2005. Merlot vines are mostly planted in San Joaquin County, followed by Sonoma, Napa and Monterey Counties.

    Drinking Merlot

    • Merlot wine is rich and dry with aromas and flavors that include baked cherries, chocolate, blackberry, plums, and mocha. The wine, which usually comes in a high-shouldered bottle, should be served when slightly below room-temperature to prevent an unpleasant taste. Placing the bottle in the refrigerator for up to 20 minutes should provide sufficient chilling.
