What Is Gpedit XP Home?

Network administrators who wish to edit the policies for users, computers and user groups can do so with the native Group Policy Editor--or GPedit--of Windows XP. However, these options differ between Windows XP Professional and XP Home.

  1. Identification

    • GPedit is the Windows Group Policy Editor in the Microsoft Windows operating system, including Windows XP. The file name for this application is "gpedit.msc" and users may see the file name when viewing the Task Manager or editing the Windows Registry.

    Function

    • The Windows Group Policy Editor utility allows the user to edit and configure groups of users and computers. Gpedit includes options for security, software installation and maintenance, scripts and folder redirection for users, groups and computers. The company states that the user "can define the state of [all] users' work environments once and rely on the system to enforce the policies" that the user has defined.

    Considerations

    • Although Windows XP Professional includes a visual interface to make editing group policies and setting easier, users of Windows XP Home edition can only edit these settings for the users and groups by directly accessing the Windows Registry. The Registry is available by opening the Start menu, clicking "Run" and typing "regedit" into the dialog that appears. Windows users can then search for and edit the specific entries that refer to group policies and settings.
