The better the portfolio, the better your chances for career success.

Teaching is a competitive profession. The portfolio is a way to shine -- describe who you are and what you can do for a school. Don't underestimate the power of presentation.

  1. Organization

    • Organized teachers are prized. Include an index identifying specific sections of the portfolio. Use dividers throughout.

    Reflection

    • Highlight your writing skills and your ability to reflect about teaching. Teachers of all disciplines are expected to use words wisely.

    Goals

    • State your goals. Describe what you hope to learn, the courses you will take or in which you are enrolled. Emphasize your desire to grow in your profession.

    Talent

    • Showcase your expertise. Include evaluations, courses taught and grade levels, certifications and letters of recommendation. Talent counts. Include all honorary recognition you received for exemplary work. It could be a writing contest, math competition or a sports trophy.

    Visuals

    • Visuals are powerful. Include photographs of students on field trips or working in the classroom. Also, consider long, creative projects such as murals collages or posters.

    Creativity

    • Think outside the box. Include creative units you designed and student work that shows mastery of the concept.
