Types of Indoor Christmas Trees

Before going out to buy a Christmas tree to set up and decorate inside this December, consider what type of tree is best. Trees vary widely in characteristics and price.

Cut Tree

Traditionally, people prefer getting cut trees to decorate and keep in the home during the weeks around Christmas. The exact varieties of trees available varies regionally, but some popular types include Douglas fir, noble fir, Scotch pine, balsam fir, Virginia pine, Leyland cypress and white spruce.

Live Tree

A less wasteful way to enjoy a fragrant Christmas tree indoors is to purchase a live tree with its root ball and plant it outside after the holiday. Live trees are more expensive than cut trees and are also much heavier and harder to transport. In addition, they should be kept inside for no more than five days and might not survive the transplant, especially in cold climates.

Artificial Tree

Artificial Christmas trees last many years and generally cost less than purchasing a fresh tree every year would have. Artificial trees do not have the scent of a pine or fir tree, but they can look very similar to a fresh tree. Some artificial trees even include lights, which simplifies the process of setting up and decorating the tree.
