How Do I Make a Pattern for a Car Seat Cover?

A hands-on way to create a pattern is to transfer the pattern from a three-dimensional muslin prototype to a two-dimensional representation on paper. Darts are what convert a flat piece of fabric into a perfectly shaped cover. You will need muslin fabric, a stapler, draft paper, a pencil and a ruler (optional).

  1. Drape

    • Take the muslin and drape your car seat. Mold the fabric to the seat by pinching the fabric outward, not by tucking. In other words, you are sculpting a car seat cover inside out. Staple seams wherever you choose, trying to create straight lines.

    Clip

    • Remove the muslin mold from the car seat. Now clip about one inch outside the staple lines forming even seams. Do not worry if there are parts of the fabric that overlap. These are the darts. Your only concern should be even seam allowances.

    Transfer

    • Remove the staples so the muslin lies flat. The shape will appear odd but this is your pattern. Place the muslin pattern onto draft paper and trace it. Anywhere the fabric was overlapped, the lines will appear crooked. Leave it that way. When you are sewing you will know this is where you need to add a dart.
