Guidelines for Handling Asbestos-Containing Materials at C&D Recycling Centers in North Carolina
The inhalation of asbestos fibers has been known to cause serious illnesses, including malignant lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. If you live in North Carolina and are planning to dispose of asbestos material at a C&D Recycling Center, you must follow specific guidelines.
-
Identification
-
Asbestos has been used for insulation, roofing, fireproofing, sound absorption and strengthening cement. There are two major groups of asbestos minerals: serpentine and amphibole.
Warning
-
It is important to follow safe disposal procedures to minimize the risk of asbestos-related diseases. Removal of asbestos is complex and should only be done by a contractor with special training in handling such hazardous materials.
-
Consideration
-
Asbestos is only accepted at the Brunswick Construction and Demolition (C&D) Landfill in Bolivia, North Carolina. In order to be accepted the asbestos must be packaged in accordance with North Carolina solid waste management rules.
Guidelines
-
The asbestos must be wet down, and while still wet packed in leak-proof containers or wrapping. Such packaging must be clearly and visibly labeled as "Asbestos-containing Material."
Types
-
If you are using a leak proof wrapper to dispense the wet asbestos, it must be sealed and equal at least 2 mil plastic in thickness. It must then additionally be placed in a burlap bag to protect the wrapper from being punctured. The burlap bag must be wet down as well and finally labeled "Asbestos-containing Material."
