Car Seat Undermat Safety

Car Seat Undermat Safety thumbnail
Undermats keep car seats clean.

A car seat undermat protects the car seat from indentations from a child car safety seat as well as liquid and food spillage. Undermats are made from nylon or rubber and sometimes have storage pouches.

  1. Cloth Interiors

    • Nylon or rubber undermats work well for cloth car seats and provide general protection against spills. Both types of undermats grip the cloth seat well, which helps prevent a child safety seat from sliding. Any spills should be cleaned quickly to avoid runoff onto the car seat. Liquid spills left unattended may eventually wick through undermats into the car seat material.

    Leather Interiors

    • Rubber undermats should be used on leather car seat interiors. The rubber undermat grips a leather seat snugly which prevents a child safety seat from sliding. However, using a nylon undermat on a leather seat tends to allow a child safety seat to slide. Liquid spills should be cleaned quickly to avoid runoff onto the leather car seat.

    Safety Precautions

    • Have your child safety seat installed on the undermat and inspected by a certified car seat technician.
