What Is the Purpose of a Cigar Humidor?

Proper storage of cigars requires a controlled environment to maintain freshness.

Cigars are made from different leaves of a tobacco plant to make up the three parts of its construction -- binder, filler and wrapper. The climate in which cigars are made is tropical so it's best to store cigars in a place that effectively mimics those kinds of temperatures and a humidor is just the right place.

Freshness

When a cigar is stored in a dry place it begins to unravel and rot in as little as two weeks. As the cigar begins to rot, it will not burn evenly, the taste becomes harsh and sour, and small holes in the wrapper develop.

Environment Control

It is not possible to ensure the right temperature and humidity when cigars are stored in an open area. Humidors provide a controlled environment for cigar storage. Cigar Trends states the average temperature you need to keep your cigars fresh is 72 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity of 70 percent.

Longevity

Cigar shops have to keep an inventory of cigars on hand. If you've ever walked into a cigar shop and stepped into an enclosed glass room to pick out your favorite brand of cigar, you've walked into a humidor. Cigars kept in humidors retain moisture and can last indefinitely.
