Design to Print Process

Every page in a printed magazine began with a design idea.

The process of developing and delivering printed materials includes many steps. The design-to-print process begins with brainstorming and discussions between the design team and the client, continues through layout and proof approval and reaches physical realization with printing.

  1. Brainstorming and Discussion

    • A graphic design team drafts various initial design concepts, taking into account real-world deadlines and information from the client about aesthetic preferences and functional needs. The team presents these concepts to the client for feedback. If the client approves one of these ideas, the design team moves on to the layout stage. If not, then the design team continues to draft ideas until the client approves one.

    Layout and Proof Approval

    • The design team takes the approved concept and explores layout possibilities and materials, working with production artists and copy writers if applicable. The team creates a digital proof and delivers it to the client for final approval. Once the client approves of the proof, the printing process begins.

    Printing

    • The design team selects a printer according to the client's budget and any logistical considerations for delivering the design. The team gives all elements to the printer, who prints a physical proof, or printed example of the final product. The team and the client either approve the printer's proof or request minor changes, and the printer prints the design in the quantity required.
