What Is a Flat Tube SDTV?

Flat tube SDTVs are still being produced.

A flat tube standard definition television (SDTV) is a tube-based television with a flat -- not convex -- screen. Despite the popularity of plasma, projection and liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions, many companies still produce flat tube SDTVs.

  1. Picture Quality

    • The picture quality of a newer flat screen tube-based television is comparable to that of an LCD, plasma or projection television when watching standard-definition TV. However, flat tube SDTVs cannot display channels in high-definition like the newer flat panel TVs can.

    Advantages

    • Flat tube SDTVs cost significantly less than their plasma, projection and LCD counterparts. Tube televisions are also less susceptible to image burn-in -- when a static image stays on the screen too long and gets "burned in" to the screen -- than plasma and LCD TVs are.

    Disadvantages

    • Aside from their inability to display channels in high-definition, flat tube SDTVs also have a size and weight disadvantage compared to LCD, plasma and projection televisions. Fewer stores sell flat-tube SDTVs than flat panel TVs, and far fewer models of tube TVs are being produced today.
