How Is the Layout of a Kitchen Important for Efficiency?
Like any workplace, a kitchen benefits from a good design that saves the cook time and improves efficiency. Depending on the size of the kitchen, several layout options may work well. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Work Triangle
-
Regardless of the kitchen size, a work triangle is imperative for efficiency. The three triangle points are the range, sink and refrigerator, and the distance between them should minimize the number of steps the cook needs to make while working.
Triangle Dimensions
-
The entire triangle should be less than 27 feet but more than 12 feet, and each triangle side should be between 4 and 9 feet long. The space between the counters needs to be 42 to 48 inches wide so two people can pass each other and appliance doors can be easily and fully opened.

Common Layouts
-
L-shaped kitchens are most prevalent, with the stove and refrigerator flanking the sink on one side and the cabinets and countertops opposite. U-shaped designs place the sink in the center of three walls with the refrigerator and range facing each other from the remaining walls. Apartments and small condominiums typically have I-shaped or galley style layouts. The I-shape has everything lined up on one wall, and the galley design has cabinets and appliances facing from opposing walls.
