Diatomaceous Earth for Fleas in a Yard

To prevent fleas, it is important to treat both the dog and the yard.

Fleas, small biting insects, reproduce quickly and often cause repeated infestations on dogs and other pets because people fail to treat their yard. Products like diatomaceous earth provide nontoxic ways to combat a flea infestation.

Identification

Diatomaceous earth, commonly known as DE, is a mixture of finely ground diatoms, a type of algae. The powderlike substance features sharp edges which are deadly to fleas, worms and other garden pests, according to the Daily Puppy.

Treating the Yard

It is important to mow the grass before applying any type of flea control. Mowing helps remove hiding places for the fleas, and raking up clippings may remove some fleas. Apply a dusting of DE all over the yard to help kill fleas.

Treating Pets

In addition to treating the yard, treat pets with DE to help prevent them from bringing more fleas into the yard space. Apply a sprinkling of DE along the pet's spine and then rub it into its fur, suggests the Care 2 Healthy and Green Living website.

Function

DE works by scrubbing the bodies of fleas that come in contact with it. The sharp edges poke holes in the flea, rendering it unable to survive.

Warning

Be sure to purchase food-grade DE rather than the DE for swimming pools, which may contain chemical additives. DE is typically available at garden supply stores, natural pet stores and health food stores.
