Aerospace Welding Certification

Aerospace welding certification holders are prepared to weld in the unique conditions faced by the aerospace industry. Certifications are provided by the American Welding Society.

  1. Aerospace Welding

    • Aerospace welding is a subset of welding in general. Aerospace welding training addresses the unique conditions and problems faced by welders servicing airplanes, space shuttles and other craft that travel through the air or outer space.

    Training Topics

    • Training topics specific to aerospace welding include purging techniques, heat input, and basic metallurgy relating to super alloys used in the aerospace industry. Such alloys include steel or aluminum alloys, stainless steel, titanium, cobalt and nickel-based alloys. Courses typically take between one and two weeks to complete and the only prerequisite is a high-school diploma.

    Certification

    • Certification is provided by the American Welding Society (AWS). Certifications available to graduates of aerospace welding training courses include the AWS certified welding inspector (CWI)) and the specification for fusion welding for aerospace applications (AWS D17.1). Certifications must be obtained from the AWS or a licensed certification provider. Certifications cost either $800 or $1,015 (as of 2010) depending on whether you are an AWS member or not.
