My Computer Won't Recognize MP4 Players

My Computer Won't Recognize MP4 Players thumbnail
An MP4 player is a video-capable MP3 player.

MP4 players are popular alternatives to MP3 players, such as the iPod. An MP4 player has all the functionality of an MP3 player with the added bonus of being able to play video files. Some MP4 players are extremely cheap, and your PC may have difficulty recognizing them.

  1. Finding The Proper Drivers

    • Most MP4 players will come with an installation disc and USB cord that will help your computer recognize your new device. This installation disc will have the needed drivers. If you don't have the disc, you will have to visit the manufacturer's website to download the drivers. Be sure to update your computer with any Windows updates as well.

    USB Problems

    • USB cords can be damaged easily. They can be inserted with the flat side flipped and that could render your USB drive useless. Be sure your USB cord doesn't have any rips or tears and is inserted properly into the drive. To make sure the problem is not a specific USB drive, try plugging the cord into a different USB port to see if your computer recognizes it.

    Battery Issues

    • Most MP4 players come uncharged out of the box and may not work when attached with a USB cord. A good rule of thumb is to plug the MP4 player into your computer using the USB cord, then leave it alone for at least two hours. This will ensure your MP4 player is charged, which should lead to easier recognition by your computer.
