Mailing List Privacy Policy

Information privacy policies for Internet mailing lists can vary greatly and may put your personal information at risk. Review all privacy policies before joining or posting to a list to understand what information is made available to the list and how your information will be used.

  1. Risks

    • At a minimum, all electronic mailing lists have your email address on file. Other commonly stored information includes your name and any other information you may have volunteered such as your location or demographics. Discussion lists may also archive any posts sent to the list.

    Policies

    • Well-run mailing lists have a privacy policy stateing how the mailing list intends to use your information, whether your information can be transferred or sold to another party, whether archives are kept and if those archives are public. Mailing lists may be subject to two or more privacy policies if the list is run by one organization but hosted by another business. In this case, ask your list administrator which policy, if either, supersedes the other.

    Considerations

    • Only join mailing lists with the minimum required information. When in doubt, do not join a mailing list that does not clearly state how they will use and protect your personal information.
