Ramps provide entry access to people with disabilities.

Ramps provide access to buildings that otherwise require a person to be able to climb stairs. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration provides guidelines for ramps, which reduce the risk of injury and improve accessibility for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility.

  1. Incline

    • Per OSHA standards, the maximum slope of a ramp should not exceed 20 degrees from horizontal. This is a ratio of one vertical to three horizontal.

    Length

    • Due to the above restrictions for maximum ramp incline, the length of the ramp may be significant. Handrails can provide support for people walking along a ramp. Landings can be provided along the length of a ramp providing a level surface where an individual can stop and rest.

    Exception

    • Due to inadequate space, the above requirements may not be met. If a ramp must exceed a ratio of one vertical to eight horizontal, OSHA requires that cleats are installed along the ramp at least every 14 inches to make the ramp more safe.
