What Is a Police Duty Belt?

A police duty belt is an essential part of a police officer's uniform. Unlike other belts, these belts have places in which to store police equipment such as guns, batons, handcuffs and other police tools.

Function

The purpose of the belt is to allow a police officer to keep his hands free. Having the equipment readily accessible, but not in his hands, allows him to stay prepared at all times while performing his duties.

Considerations

Police duty belts often cause discomfort for the officer. The weight of the belt and the bulkiness of the equipment jutting into an officer's side is an ongoing concern.

Alternatives

Although not commonly used by many states, harness type belts, suspenders and vests are good alternatives to belts. They more evenly distribute the weight and allow equipment to rest in more comfortable positions.
