ANSI Paper Standards

The American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, released the ANSI/ASME Y14.1 paper standard in 1995. Similar to the ISO standard used in Europe, the ANSI/ASME Y14.1 includes five sizes based on multiples of one or both measurements of an 8.5-by-11-inch sheet of paper.

  1. ANSI A

    • ANSI gave the existing 8.5-by-11-inch paper standard, or "letter," the name "ANSI A." ANSI A is most similar to the A4 ISO paper size used in Europe.

    ANSI B Legal and Tabloid

    • ANSI B Legal paper is 11 inches long and 17 inches wide. ANSI B Tabloid paper is 17 inches long and 11 inches wide. ANSI B Tabloid paper is the same physical size as ANSI B Legal. The different names denote different orientations -- "legal" for landscape and "tabloid" for portrait.

    ANSI C

    • ANSI C paper is 17 wide and 22 inches long, and most similar to ISO A2.

    ANSI D

    • ANSI D paper is 22 inches wide and 34 inches long. It is most similar to ISO A1.

    ANSI E

    • ANSI E paper is 33 inches wide and 34 inches long, and most similar to ISO A0.
