When to Trim My Azalea Bushes?
Azaleas do not need to be trimmed regularly unless the plant is unhealthy or growing out of its container. Most of these problems can be prevented by choosing the right plant for the location. Prune azaleas to improve the look or health of the plant. Azaleas have growth buds along the stem that are stimulated by pruning. Each cut will stimulate the growth of three to five new sprouts. This rejuvenates the plant and helps fill in where growth is sparse. Does this Spark an idea?

Pinch Growing Tips Frequently
-
Pinching the growing tips throughout the growing season will help the plant grow into a well-branched, compact plant. Because flowers form on the previous year's growth, this will result in a healthy plant with many flowers.
Major Pruning after Blooms Fade
-
The heavy pruning chores need to be done after the plant blooms. Immediately after the blooms fade, thin out the plant and prune it to the desired size. This can be done all at once, or several times during the spring and early summer, but stop pruning at the end of June. Late pruning will remove flower buds and reduce blooms next year.

Late Pruning
-
Late growing shoots that quickly grow long and out of bounds need to be trimmed in the late fall. These are shoots that are out of line with the shape of the plant. They rarely produce many flowers and can be safely removed in late October or early November.
