How Do I Shop & Compare Natural Gas Prices?

Renters and homeowners in many states have the option to shop around for the best natural gas prices available from a variety of suppliers. This is because deregulated natural gas markets create competition within the utility system.

Therms

Your monthly meter reading is converted to a natural gas usage measuring unit known as "therms." Your therm usage is then multiplied by a series of charges where the price per therm is staggered based on the volume consumed. Compare the price per therm across natural gas companies.

Other Charges

Compare the additional sums added to your bill by natural gas companies. A customer cost may be levied for maintaining your account and billing, an environmental recovery cost is multiplied by your therm usage, and taxes based on your billing amount are also charged.

Shop Around

Call your natural gas supplier and inquire about additional natural gas supply options. Because of deregulation, most companies provide this information on their websites, in mailings or over the telephone. Be prepared to take down names and phone numbers for contacting your options.
