Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius) is a deciduous shrub native to western Europe that is commonly cultivated as a container plant or border plant. Scotch broom requires little upkeep in the right growing conditions. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Hardiness

    • Scotch broom is suitable for a variety of climate zones, and generally grows best in full sun situations in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 5 to 8. Some cultivars are only hardy to Zone 6. Scotch broom is considered invasive in the Northwestern United States.

    Soil

    • Scotch broom is tolerant of a range of conditions, and it will grow in poor, well draining soils. The drought-tolerant plant can live in dry, slightly alkaline soils to slightly acidic soils.

    Maintenance

    • Regular pruning helps give the plant a healthy, fresh appearance and promotes new flower growth. Check the plant's foliage occasionally for common Scotch broom pests such as caterpillars and spider mites.
