What Does an Insured Package Mean? thumbnail
Insuring packages protects the sender against loss.

When sending packages, you put your faith in the delivery service to ship and deliver the package in the same condition you shipped it and to the proper address. Insurance can help to protect your belongings during their journey.

  1. Function

    • Insuring packages guarantees the sender that the package will arrive, undamaged, at the proper address. Insurance will also reimburse you for packages that are lost during shipping.

    Protection

    • According to the United States Postal Service, packages can be insured for the value of the contents, up to a maximum of $5,000 if insured online or in person at the post office, or $500 if sent through an automated postal center. For additional coverage, USPS recommends sending packages as Registered Mail, with up to $25,000 of insurance available.

    Considerations

    • To collect on an insurance claim for a damaged or lost package, the sender must fill out a claim form with the delivery service provider.
