Pruning of apple trees takes place in late winter.

Every year, gardeners grab their tools and head for their apple trees to prune the branches. Pruning helps produce good quality fruit while training the tree. In South Carolina, pruning takes place in late winter. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Timing

    • Pruning of established apple trees should occur in February or early March during the tree's dormant stage. Plan to prune your apple trees before you see any signs of new tree growth so you don't hurt the tree and make it susceptible to disease.

    Mature Trees

    • In late winter, prune any damaged branches. Also remove any branches that do not help form a new main layer of structural branches above the previous layers. Late winter is also the time to trim back one-third of the new growth from the tips of the branches.

    New Trees

    • Newly planted trees require a harsh pruning as soon as they are placed in the ground. To bring the tree and its roots back into balance, you need to prune the entire tree to just 24 to 30 inches in height. Trees from 1 to 2 years of age require pruning that keeps just 4 to 5 lateral main branches and one central leader that grows upright.
