Advice for Train Travel

Advice for Train Travel thumbnail
A relaxing way to travel.

As with any kind of travel, the key to enjoying train travel is to research and plan. Consider your region, consider your budget and consider your destination if you're going abroad.

  1. Book Early

    • In the U.S. and Canada, it pays to book well in advance. Seat sales can mean big savings, and seats tend to get more expensive closer to the date of travel. Check the "Deals" section of the Amtrak website for time-sensitive promotions and on Via Rail's website for travel into or around Canada.

    The Man in Seat Sixty-One

    • For international train travel, there is no more thorough resource than The Man in Seat Sixty-One (see Resources). This website outlines virtually every train trip on earth, with up-to-date information and prices for rail providers in most countries. The site is a must for anyone planning a trip that specifically focuses on train travel. The Man in Seat Sixty-One appreciates the romance and adventure of train travel.

    Rail Passes

    • Rail passes are especially helpful in countries with high-volume train routes or where countries are linked by rail, as in Europe. The length and price of passes varies greatly from region to region, but rail passes are almost always a great deal if you're planning to use the train a lot. Some countries like Japan have rail passes available for tourists that must be ordered from outside of the country. Check before you go.
