Tow Boat Training

You can become a tow boat operator with the proper training.

To begin a career as a tow boat operator in the United States, a candidate must first pass a variety of apprentice mate courses that are approved by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).

Apprentice Mate

Before you can become a mate or captain on a tow boat, you normally begin as an apprentice mate. In order to find this position on a working tow boat, you need to take the Apprentice Mate (Steersman) training course. This is offered at marine institutes around the country.

Length of Course

While the length of course will depend upon the institution where you choose to learn about becoming an apprentice mate, it generally lasts between 12 to 16 weeks, or around 107 hours. The course will be conducted in the classroom and on a tow boat for practical learning.

License

When you successfully finish the course and obtain your Certificate of Training, you must submit the certificate to the USCG. You will then be qualified for the USCG Code of Federal Regulations portion 46 CFR 10.205(i), which allows you to get a license as an apprentice mate.

Additional Requirements

In addition to completing the tow boat training course, you must be at least 18 years old, have proof of citizenship, and pass a physical examination and character check to work as an apprentice mate.
