Hand Sanding vs. DA Sanding

Sanding an item, whether a piece of wood or a car's paint surface, is often a tough and tiring job. Using an electric sander, such as a DA sander, or simply hand sanding has both advantages and disadvantages.

Function

DA, or dual action sanding employs an electrical mechanism that sands in two directions to facilitate faster sanding times. Hand sanding is simply using sandpaper and physically moving it back and forth to sand an item.

Considerations

The DA sanding does have a faster sand time, but if an item is delicate or only needs a slight sanding, the quality of the sanding may not be what is needed. In cases of sanding a car's paint down to the primer level, a DA sander is the suggested tool.

Other Considerations

Hand sanding is perfect for smaller projects, such as woodworking or minor home construction. Hand sanding has the advantage of taking more time so that the details of a piece can be concentrated on, rather than having the details buffed too much by an electrical sander.
