About Toyota Police SUVs

About Toyota Police SUVs thumbnail
Toyota manufactures police fleet SUVs.

Toyota is the world's largest auto manufacturer and makes fleet vehicles for police departments around the world. The company currently sells the Toyota Highlander Hybrid SUV to law enforcement departments as an energy efficient police vehicle.

  1. Environmental Impact

    • Toyota offers the Highlander Hybrid as a police fleet vehicle and bills it as a "Super Ultra Law Emission" vehicle. According to the Aspen Police Department, the 2008 test vehicles average 21.73 miles per gallon, an improvement over the 12.9 miles per gallon average of the department's traditional fleet vehicles.

    Performance and Technology

    • The Highlander Hybrid is a four-door midsize SUV that can get up to 268 horsepower. Tests from the Aspen Police department added additional police electronics and modifications to the vehicle. This let the police separate police electronics from the main vehicle battery to allow "key off" (shutting down of the main battery), while a secondary system kept critical electronics operating for up to five hours.

    Philanthropy

    • Toyota has committed resources to help local police departments. In 2009 Toyota donated two Highlander hybrids to the Cincinnati Police Department to support their K-9 unit.
