How Do They Score the GED in Texas?

The official GED test takes about seven hours to take.

The General Education Development (GED) test consists of five knowledge areas all graduating high school seniors are expected to know. The American Council on Education (ACE) develops and distributes test in partnership with local governments such as the Texas Education Agency.

Multiple-Choice Sections

The GED test has sections of multiple-choice questions in math, science and social studies. In Texas, you get one point for each correct answer on the multiple choice test questions. You get zero points if the answer is not correct or you do not answer.

Essay Section

The Language Arts portion of the GED test is a combination of two types of testing. The reading section consists of multiple-choice questions. There is a second essay area devoted to a written response to a question. The essay portion is assigned to an essay reader to score, according to ACE guidelines.

Passing Grade

In Texas, you need to have a passing score of 450 on each test with a combined score of 2250 to become GED certified. If you score lower than 410 on a test, you have a six-month waiting period before you can take the test again, according to the Texas Education Agency.
