Millions of automobile tires are used and recycled each year.

Tires keep us rolling down the highway, but they don't last forever. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 290 million scrap tires are produced each year. About 80 percent of those tires are recycled.

  1. State Mandates

    • Whole tires may not be disposed of in a Kansas landfill. Tires may only be disposed in permitted disposal facilities. Tires cut into sufficiently small pieces may be disposed in landfills.

    • Per Kansas law, tire dealers must accept a patron's old tires when they purchase new tires. Dealers are not required, however, to accept more tires than the customer purchases or accept commercial tires if they do not mount such tires.

    Approved Facilities

    • Sedgwick County, where Wichita is located, lists four sites where tires can be taken for recycling. Those locations are David's Tire and Automotive, Inc., Southwest Tire Recycling, Waste Connections Transfer Station and Waste Disposal LLC.
