What Is a Radio Code Scanner?

Police and other public services have a system of codes in place picked up by radio scanners.

Radio code scanners are handheld and mobile communication and listening devices that scan and tune into UHF and VHF frequencies. They are commonly used by police and other public services that have developed a system of codes to communicate over the radio waves.

Frequency Coverage

Choosing a scanner's frequency coverage is based on the user's needs. Basic scanners cover police, public services and aviation.

Selectivity

Clarity is important when sending and receiving codes. Choosing a scanner with high selectivity is necessary in areas where there is much radio broadcasting. High selectivity minimizes other signals from transmission interference.

Sensitivity and Memory

Obtaining a scanner with sensitivity is needed to hear weak transmissions. Scanner models should have the ability to enable and disable systems to focus on the wanted signals and to block out those not wanted.

Codes

Police, rescue and relief personnel use a color-coded system for emergency response. Code purple, for instance, means gang-related activity. Numeric codes are many, each having its own meaning. Code 4 means assistance is no longer needed.
