Eating ethnic foods is a great way to experience different cultures. Different cultures have developed their own unique cuisine using spices and flavors indigenous to the region. There are many ethnic foods from Italian to Thai, and understanding some basic ethnic food facts can make the experience more meaningful. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Healthiest Ethnic Foods

    • Ethnic foods are viable healthy food choices. According to Health.com., the top ten healthiest ethnic foods include Greek, California Fresh, Vietnamese, Japanese and Indian.

    Lower Calorie Choices

    • Various methods use in ethnic food preparation can yield low-fat, low-calorie foods. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, Chinese foods using steaming, poaching, roasting, grilling and dishes made without MSG are good choices when counting calories. Low-fat Italian foods include red sauces, piccata, sun-dried tomatoes and crushed tomatoes. When eating Mexican cuisine, try spicy chicken, rice and black beans, salsa and soft corn tortillas.

    Exotic Spices

    • Certain predominant spices are used in each ethnic food cuisines. For example, in Indian cuisine, the use of curry blends and herbs like turmeric and curry leaves are commonly used. Thai cuisine has its own distinctive flavors by using lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, limes, galangal, fish sauce and sweet basil.
