How Do Braces Work to Correct an Overbite?

An overbite is a malocclusion in which the top teeth overlap the bottom teeth. This condition is caused by factors that include your genetics and thumb-sucking. You can correct your overbite with the use of orthodontic braces.

  1. Symptoms

    • Aside from the appearance of an overbite, where your top teeth visibly protrude beyond your bottom teeth, other symptoms might include difficulty chewing certain foods or pain in the head and jaw. You can also experience jaw and head pain or speech impediments because of your overbite.

    Types

    • If your overbite involves the protrusion of bone structures in the upper jaw, it is called a skeletal overbite. If your overbite has occurred because of the forward placement of the teeth, it is defined as a dental overbite and can be resolved through the use of braces.

    Treatment

    • Talk to your orthodontist about braces as a solution for your overbite. This treatment is an effective method in eliminating the malocclusion. When your braces are applied, your teeth are guided into place with the use of bands and metal wires or ceramic. Your dentist will adjust your braces according to his guidelines. You will probably wear your braces from six months to one year or more, depending on the severity of your condition.
