    • Theophrastus (371-286 B.C.), who is considered the father of botany, first identified the rose. The Roman Emperor Nero enjoyed showering his guests with rose petals, sometimes to the point of nearly choking them, according to Lily's Rose Garden.

    • A rose plant growing at the Cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany is thought to be more than 1,000 years old. When Allied bombers attacked the city during World War II, the bush miraculously survived.

    • The largest rose garden in the world is in Cavriglia, Italy. It is home to more than 7,500 different species of roses. Meanwhile, Portland, Oregon, is known as the City of Roses and is home to the International Rose Test Garden, established in 1917.
