What Is Rough Lumber Used For?

Rough cut lumber can be a less expensive alternative to surfaced lumber.

Rough cut lumber has been cut and sold as-is, rather than run through a surfacing tool and "dressed." It is less expensive than surfaced lumber, but requires further refinement before use in most projects.

Framing

Any non-exposed framing can be constructed using rough cut lumber. Since rough cut is cheaper than surfaced lumber, you can save money on projects where the wood will be hidden anyway. Framing is almost always covered with drywall, so there will be no way to tell if the lumber is finished or not.

Rustic Projects

Floors and beams can be constructed using rough cut lumber, especially if you are aiming for a rustic look. Camps, cabins and country-style homes are frequently constructed or accented with exposed beams and wide-plank floors. Beams can be left as-is, but flooring will need to be lightly sanded and treated with polyurethane or paint.

Exterior Projects

Siding, outbuildings, decks and exterior stairs are commonly constructed with rough lumber. The risk of splintered wood coming into contact with skin is often reduced with outdoor projects, and a smooth texture is usually unnecessary.
