What Is a Hurricane Watch?
A hurricane watch is a notice from the National Hurricane Center that hurricane conditions are possible in a specified area. This means you could experience sustained winds of 74 miles per hour or more. A hurricane watch is issued 36 to 48 hours before the expected onset of a hurricane.

A hurricane watch is issued two days in advance, because once the winds get very strong, it is difficult to prepare properly for the hurricane. Stay tuned to local weather reports in case conditions get worse, and make plans to secure your property.

If you live in an area that is susceptible to hurricanes, have a family plan ready before each hurricane season. Outline what each person should do, and have emergency food, water and other supplies to last three to seven days.
