Internet Explorer is now pushed through automatic updates.

With the introduction of Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft took the unprecedented step of pushing the browser to users with the automatic update system. They continued this trend with the release of Internet Explorer 8.

  1. History

    • Microsoft rolled out Internet Explorer 8 to make Web browsing more secure and reliable. They opted to push the upgrade with the automatic update process starting in April 2009 to make installation easier for end users. IE8 is fully compliant with the W3C CSS (World Wide Web Consortium Cascading Style Sheet) standards. It is faster than earlier version if IE, and has a look and feel closer to Mozilla's Firefox.

    Installation

    • Automatic Update (AU) is Microsoft's system for pushing patches and software updates for its products to end users. Updates may also be downloaded directly from Microsoft on their Windows update site. The Internet Explorer 8 installer is downloaded automatically, but it is only presented to users who have local administrator privileges on their computer. Although the installer is presented to all administrator users, they may choose not to install the software. The options offered are to "Install," "Don't Install," or "Ask Me Later."

By pushing the distribution of IE8 this way, users have more control over the installation.

    Roll Back

    • Some users may not like IE8 and may prefer to go back to an older version of the browser such as IE6 (not recommended for security reasons) or IE7. To revert to a previous version of Internet Explorer, simply uninstall Internet Explorer 8. Go to "Start," "Control Panel," then "Add/Remove Programs."
