Proper documentation improves process flow in an organization.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops standards for use by business and government. Documentation standards are covered by ISO 9001:2008, quality management systems.

  1. Purpose

    • The purpose of the documentation covered by ISO 9001:2008 is to transmit information and share knowledge within the organization. Documentation is a way to manage and control how people in the organization perform processes.

    Documentation

    • According to the ISO, the required quality management system documentation includes a quality policy and quality objectives; a quality manual, specifies procedures and documents the organization needs for effective planning, operation and control of its processes and specified records.

    Specified Procedures and Records

    • Specific documented procedures required by ISO are control of documents, control of records, internal audit, control of nonconforming product, corrective action and preventive action. ISO provides a list of 21 specified records, including management reviews, results of design and development reviews, verification and validation, and the results of many other internal processes.
