Phone Call Recording Guidelines

Some businesses may monitor phone calls with customers.

While you may have a good reason to want to record a phone call, particularly if you're running a business, you'll need to follow certain guidelines and regulations.

  1. Telephone Companies

    • Telephone companies are in the perfect position to record phone conversations. Before a recording device is put in place, though, the people who own the telephone line will need to be notified.

    Businesses

    • If a business wants to record a phone call in order to better train its staff or keep a log of customer contact, it must have a recording at the beginning of the phone call to let the person on the line know that the conversation will be recorded.

    Personal Calls

    • While the Federal Communications Commission doesn't have a set of laws regarding the recording of private phone calls, state regulations on this issue vary. Before attempting to record a phone call, make sure to check with your local and state departments to make sure that you're not in breach of any laws.
