Toothpaste Problems

Toothpaste Problems thumbnail
Though a part of good dental hygiene, toothpaste can have adverse effects.

Toothpaste is an important part of dental and hygiene care. It can help reduce plaque buildup, prevent cavities and eliminate bad breath. However, there are times when toothpaste can actually cause or exasperate certain health problems.

  1. Nausea and Diarrhea

    • Most toothpastes are harmful if ingested. Swallowing excessive amounts of toothpaste may induce diarrhea and nausea. Immediate medical care is necessary if toothpaste is ingested; this is especially true for children.

    Fluorosis

    • Swallowing large amounts of toothpaste can also lead to Fluorosis, a dental condition that causes white specks and streaks to form on the enamel. If large amounts of toothpaste is consumed on a prolonged basis, teeth may become stained or cracked. This condition usually presents itself in children, who are prone to inadvertently consuming toothpaste.

    Tooth Sensitivity

    • Whitening and other abrasive toothpastes can lead to tooth sensitivity in some people because of chemicals that wear away at the enamel. For those with sensitive teeth, the baking soda found in most toothpastes may cause pain or discomfort.
