According to FlyingWithDisability.org, "Airlines, in line with the FAA safety regulations, must allow travelers dependent upon assistive devices carriage of such items." If the chair is collapsible, and there is room, it may be stored in the cabin. Non-collapsible chairs are transported in the cargo area.

Southwest Airlines policy is that wet-cell batteries must be removed and transported in a battery box in accordance with FAA regulations. It is helpful for you to label the chair with battery type and removal instructions. The FAA allows non-spillable chair batteries to travel in the cabin provided they have been disconnected and inspected by qualified airline personnel.
