  1. Symptoms

    • The first symptom of rose rust disease is the development of orange pustules on the undersides of the leaves. As the disease spreads, yellow or orange colored spots develop on the upper side of the leaves. Infected stems, shoots and canes typically wither and curl.

    Spread of Disease

    • In areas where rose rust has been a problem, it is best to plant resistant variety. Contact a local nursery to determine which rust resistant varieties are available in your area.

    Control

    • Planting roses in a sunny area of the garden and space the roses apart to allow for good air circulation. Remove any infected plants and debris to prevent the spread of disease. Always water the soil around plants, to prevent wet leaves which are more likely to develop rust. Sulfur and lime fungicides help control rust disease.
