How Do Energy Saver Light Bulbs Work?

How Do Energy Saver Light Bulbs Work? thumbnail
Compact fluorescent light bulbs can save you money.

Using energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) can reduce your electricity costs. Even though they are more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, they last much longer and use less electricity, so they are still cost-effective in the end. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. How They Work

    • Energy saver bulbs have tubes with argon and mercury vapor. When an electric current is passed through the tube, it generates ultraviolet light, which is invisible. This light activates the phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, which then emits visible light.

    How CFLs Save Energy

    • Most of the wasted energy from incandescent bulbs is emitted as heat instead of light. CFL bulbs emit about 70 per cent less heat than traditional bulbs and use up to 75 per cent less electricity.

    Tips

    • Your energy saver bulbs will last longer if you avoid touching the exterior of the bulb when screwing it in. Also, leave them on for at least 15 minutes at a time and keep them in open fixtures in the house so air can get at the bulb.
