Cinnamon is a spice widely used in many different cuisines around the globe. It has also used medicinally as a treatment for gastrointestinal problems. Cinnamon is produced by grinding the bark of a cinnamon tree into a powder, which is then packaged and sold. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cinnamon Tree

    • Cinnamomum zeylanicum is a tropical evergreen tree native to Sri Lanka and Southern India. This species is also known as Ceylon cinnamon or true cinnamon. Cinnamon spice is derived from the inner bark, which is rolled into quills that are tan in color.

    Growth Characteristics

    • Cinnamon belongs to the Lauracae family and can grow between 10 and 15 meters high, with oval and oblong leaves, and small white to yellowish flowers that produce purple berries. The tree's bark is smooth, yellowish, and very aromatic.

    Cultivation and Production

    • Cinnamon trees in cultivation are grown for 2 years and are then continually pruned to promote abundant shoot growth. After two years of growing, the new shoots are stripped of their bark. The outer woody portion of the bark is removed, and the thin inner bark is left to dry and curl.
