Harassment and bullying are behaviors found in all spheres of society, from schools to the workplace. These behaviors cause people to fear and experience physical danger, emotional and mental distress, and harm. Many societies enforce policies to eradicate these behaviors to create a safer society.

The definition of harassment and bullying is context specific, as every situation is different. Generally, an act by others that makes you feel threatened and lowers your self-esteem falls under these policies. Examples include persistent teasing, public humiliation, harassment based on sex, race and faith, and intimidating behavior.
Reporting and Investigating

Bullying and harassment can be reported by anyone, witnesses or victims. Organizations and institutions must have trained staff and procedures for reporting these behaviors. Company officials or police usually take reports and investigate the complaint by consulting the victims and witnesses. All investigations are handled with confidentiality.

The consequences of bullying or harassment are case-specific, depending on the severity. Possible consequences are suspension or dismissal from a company or institution, detention and counseling, removal of privileges and legal action taken by the victim.
