Housing Authority Renters' Rights

People living in housing funded or provided by a government housing authority have legal rights similar to the rights enjoyed by renters in a traditional tenant-landlord lease agreement. Special rights also address issues of communication and eligibility to receive housing assistance.

  1. Eligibility

    • Renters are entitled to consideration for housing assistance based on income, number of people in the household and other factors outlined by the government. Non-discrimination laws apply. These include protection against denial based on race, color, national origin, sex, religion or disability.

    Tenancy

    • Tenants have the right to a safe, livable dwelling. This includes the right to have repairs performed in a timely manner and the right to hold a landlord responsible for damage caused by the landlord's negligence. Tenants' rights include protection against being locked out of their property or having their personal property seized by the landlord.

    Communication

    • Renters can organize community groups and conduct group meetings without the landlord present. They also have the right to be notified before landlords enter the property on a non-emergency basis.
