What Is an Ortho Glass Backslab?

Ortho Glass backslab casts are water resistant.

An Ortho Glass backslab is a type of cast used in the healing of fractures. Fiberglass surrounded with padding creates a stronger cast or splint and is lighter than plaster, which causes less stress on the fracture.

Strength

Plaster casts weaken over time and become soft when wet, which compromises the healing process. Ortho-Glass backslabs offer strength plus water resistance. They cost more than plaster casts, but do not lose strength over time as do plaster casts.

Uses

Ortho Glass backslabs work well as splints or casts. For example, after preparing the slab for application, apply it to the palm-side of the forearm (volar surface) rolling it up in the palm. Form it to the needed angle at the wrist for support and wrap it with an elastic wrap to hold it in place.

Application

To create an Ortho Glass backslab, medical technicians cut the slabs a little longer than needed so as to fold the ends back to make a smooth edge. The technicians dip the slabs in water and lay them on a towel to remove excess water before applying them to the injured area.
