The Reproduction of Aloe Vera Plants

Aloe vera seedlings are transplanted into larger pots as they grow.

Aloe vera has been cultivated for thousands of years. Many people grow it as a source of first aid, as the sap in its leaves soothes burns, rashes and small wounds. Aloe vera may be reproduced from pups and from seeds. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Source of Pups

    • When Aloe vera plants reach maturity, they produce smaller plants called pups, which sprout around the base of the plant. The pups may be removed from the mother plant when they are over 2 inches tall.

    Pups Process

    • The pups are cut away from the mother plant with a sharp sterilized knife. The small aloes are dried in a shady area for two days. The pups are planted in small pots with a mixture of equal parts sand and potting soil.

    Seeds

    • Aloe vera plants rarely bloom and produce seeds when grown inside. Seeds are available for purchase, however, and may be planted in trays of sand and misted until the seedlings grow 2 to 3 inches tall.
