ISO Standards for Perimeter Security
Keep out the bad; keep in the good. Successful perimeter security accomplishes this simple, two-part mission. International standards for perimeter security help guide organizations in processes and evaluation of perimeter security operations.
-
Purpose
-
Standards for perimeter security provide a template for organizations needing to implement security practices at their perimeters, real and virtual. This reduces the need to reinvent the perimeter security wheel and provides clear and consistent guidance for implementing and monitoring the success of operations.
Extent
-
According to the International Standards Organization (ISO), perimeter security is only a separate standard section for port and maritime security (ISO 20858:2004). However, standards for perimeter security are included as part of security standards for information technology, facility, supply chain and transportation applications.
-
Use
-
The ISO reminds users that standards are voluntary. That is, organizations voluntarily adhere to standards to ensure a certain level of performance. Perimeter security standards can be monitored and evaluated using ISO standards, but they cannot be certified.
